I think you're on the right track with this being an Ipswich X Savannah intergrade. Their ranges don't overlap normally but I think a couple of "regular" Savannah Sparrows show up each year on Sable Island among the Ipswich, so that could be a source. And a few Ipswich could stay to breed on the mainland unnoticed. DNA testing is an interesting idea. A few years ago a vagrant Tropical Kingbird (in Michigan, I think?) was identified by the DNA in its droppings! I'm not sure whether subspecies of Savannah Sparrow are different enough to be identified that way, but it probably does mean we should be gathering anything a rare bird leaves behind for future testing....David Sibleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17594789223586882529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2762734516532406153.post-27664612857374649602012-03-01T11:47:04.997-08:002012-03-01T11:47:04.997-08:00Looks like a dark Ipswich. The one I seen last spring was really light, but I seen another one this past Autumn that was much darker. It could just be due to the location.Jimmyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06219111848200111243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2762734516532406153.post-21573215237489848632012-02-29T13:50:27.180-08:002012-02-29T13:50:27.180-08:00Wow. I'm looking in the Sibley Guide to Birds and thinking about what you said about subspecies hybrids. From Sibley's illustrations, I think it might be a Grayish x Ipswich SAVS. That would explain why it has the look of an Ipswich but is darker and streakier. Still thinking, though.Katie Boordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09614072371382246283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2762734516532406153.post-60865637478842696302012-02-27T13:12:55.203-08:002012-02-27T13:12:55.203-08:00Cool shot of the elusive white hawk in flight - he...Cool shot of the elusive white hawk in flight - he's on my wish listPeterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06495804531392146608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2762734516532406153.post-5289236984614198712012-02-26T17:33:20.251-08:002012-02-26T17:33:20.251-08:00Congrats on the cool camera and the great birding!...Congrats on the cool camera and the great birding!

--Katie BoordKatie Boordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09614072371382246283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2762734516532406153.post-12487296089026470052012-02-26T04:17:02.774-08:002012-02-26T04:17:02.774-08:00Congratulations...Congratulations...Jimmyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06219111848200111243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2762734516532406153.post-33007381101404580062012-02-25T17:35:07.659-08:002012-02-25T17:35:07.659-08:00Such power in my hands!!!
